WATKINS GLEN-The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), 610 S. Decatur St, Watkins Glen, is celebrating 25 years of collecting, preserving, and sharing on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 2 to 5 p.m. with food, wine, beer, and live music from local favorites Robin Burnett and Abby Lane.
In 1998, a group of motorsports enthusiasts recognized the need for a dedicated institution that would preserve the rich history of motor racing and serve as a valuable resource for researchers, enthusiasts, and industry professionals. They envisioned and established the International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) in Watkins Glen, a town known for its deep connection to motor racing.
“Our audience is truly international but our roots are local, tied to the birthplace of post-WWII road racing right here in Watkins Glen, 75 years ago,” said Mark Steigerwald, executive director of the IMRRC. “Help us celebrate, and share your stories with other attendees!”
The center’s vast collection includes an archive of photographs, films, books, periodicals, and documents chronicling the history of motorsports from its earliest days to the present. The IMRRC’s commitment to preserving racing history goes beyond paper and pixels. The center has also undertaken numerous initiatives to restore and maintain historic racing cars, ensuring that these tangible pieces of history remain in driving condition for generations.
