YATES COUNTY--The Yates County Bicentennial Committee is hosting an 1823 Dinner, which will feature an authentic meal from the time when the county was established. The community dinner will take place this Saturday at the Penn Yan Elks Lodge. Guests will have the opportunity to enjoy 19th-century cuisine prepared just as it would have been in that era.
The 1823 Dinner was one of the events planned by the Bicentennial Committee, a subcommittee consisting of Tricia Noel, executive director/curator of the Yates County History Center, Leonard Kataskas, Yates County Historian, and Kristin Burch, fourth-grade teacher at St. Michael’s.
“I’ve always wanted to host a historical dinner because I find food from the past fascinating,” said Noel. “I think people learn by doing - it’s a fun way to learn about the past.”
Chefs Jeremiah and Ellie Lewis Molina have prepared a diverse menu that includes chicken fricassee, pork and pippin pie and short ribs with cherry and ale jus as entrees. Sides include mashed parsnips, stewed peas, and dressed macaroni, along with a vegetarian entree option. For dessert, bird’s nest pudding and gingerbread cake are available. Assorted breads and soft drinks will also be served.
