PENN YAN--During the Yates County legislative meeting held Tuesday, Oct. 10, representatives from the Yates Community Center project presented an update. The update included funding status, staffing additions, and the announcement that many outdoor improvements have been completed. Later in the week, the Community Table Dinner committee presented the center with a $16,200 check from the fundraiser held in September. The Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting to recognize the completion of the new basketball and pickleball courts, a playground and pavilion.
During the meeting, minutes were approved from the meetings held on Sept. 11 and Oct. 3. Additionally, the committee reports included an announcement that Yates County had won the 2024 New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) Calendar Contest with a photo of the groundbreaking ceremony for the broadband project. NYSAC had requested each county in New York state to submit a photo for the theme “Counties In Action.” The Yates County picture was chosen as the cover photo as well as the photo for January.
County Administrator Nonie Flynn also explained that NYSAC has told counties to “be careful in budgeting for next year” as the financial forecast from Albany “doesn’t look that rosy.” Flynn also announced the meeting would be her last as the administrator and received a round of applause. The upcoming election in November will include Flynn, Leigh MacKerchar, Leslie Church, Daniel Banach, Mark Morris, Jan Enos, Jeff Bradley, Phillip Rahr and Teresa Hoban for the four positions of legislator in the third district.
The legislature designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the county and recognized the Memorial for K-9 Public Service at the Yates County Public Safety Building. A public hearing on the proposed local law providing defense and indemnification of the Office of Sheriff of the County of Yates was scheduled for Nov. 13 during the regularly scheduled meeting in the Yates County Legislative Chambers.
The body also authorized to fill and reclassify some government positions and the legislature adopted the 2024 fiscal year workers’ compensation budget. The legislative body acknowledged the 100th birthday of World War II U.S. Navy Veteran John Mattison on Oct. 21. It was also proclaimed that Oct. 13 will be observed as the U.S. Navy Birthday, Nov. 10 as the U.S. Marine Corps Birthday, and Nov. 11 as Veterans Day in Yates County.
Finally, the public hearing was closed and the legislature adopted local law 2-2023, renewing a local law establishing an additional mortgage tax for mortgages on real property situated in Yates County. Legislator Bill Holgate noted this is not a new tax only a renewal.
